Garage Door Tracks

Types of Garage Door Tracks
Garage door tracks are responsible for guiding the rollers of the door when it is opened and closed with the automatic opener. There are two basic types of garage door track systems. Some tracks are installed to the ceiling of the garage while others can be attached to a sidewall of the garage. They both come in two standard widths, 2 inches and 3 inches.
Roll-up Sectional Garage Doors The most common track system is for a door that rolls up and stores overhead. The tracks are attached to the wall surrounding the opening for the door and also they are also attached to the ceiling. If your garage has a low ceiling, you should consider installing low headroom tracks that can operate with less than 5 inches of headroom.
Sliding Garage Doors The second, less common type of track system is for garage doors that slide to the side. These tracks are attached to a sidewall of the garage. Sliding doors may be necessary in garages where there is not sufficient headroom to install tracks on the ceiling or the ceiling cannot support the weight of a heavy door.
Track Maintenance
Garage door tracks are mostly commonly made of galvanized steel. They are very durable and will not corrode like traditional steel. They should be cleaned periodically to remove any debris that may prevent the door from opening and closing correctly. After many years of use, the tracks may need to be repaired or replaced. If you continue to use the door on the broken tracks, it may eventually cause damage to other components of the doors, such as the rollers or hinges.
