Garage Door Insulation
By ProMatcher Staff
Garage doors can be insulated in a variety of different ways. While wooden garage doors are naturally better insulators, metal and vinyl doors with a layer of insulation will outperform wooden garage doors.
Types of Insulation
Garage doors are typically insulated with either polystyrene or polyurethane. Polystyrene comes in sheets that are sandwiched between panels of steel, vinyl, or another material. Polyurethane insulation comes in a foam that can fill up all of the space between the garage door panels. As a result, polyurethane insulation works nearly twice as well as polystyrene insulation and comes at a moderately higher price. Additionally, these doors are stronger and better able to reduce street noise.
Are insulated garage doors more expensive? Garage doors that are well insulated are more expensive; however, long-term energy savings typically offset the higher initial cost.

Should all garage doors be insulated? In areas where temperatures vary greatly by season, it is essential to consider the type of insulation that the garage door offers. Insulation plays a key role in maintaining and regulating the temperature of the garage. If living spaces, especially bedrooms, are attached to a poorly insulated garage, they will be much colder that other areas of the home during the cold winter months. If you live in a warmer climate where temperatures vary minimally by season, buying insulated garage doors will be less of a priority.
What's the R-value of the garage door? An R-value is used to measure the efficiency of the insulation. A garage door with a higher R-value is better equipped to keep external air temperatures from affecting the interior of the garage. Single-layer steel doors offer very little insulation while double-layer steel doors with polystyrene insulation have R-values that range from 4-9. The top of the line polyurethane-insulated garage doors can boast R-values above 17.
