Garage Door Springs: Extension vs Torsion






Types of Garage Door Springs

There are two types of garage door springs: extension springs and torsion springs. Springs will need to be replaced after approximately 7-12 years of regular use. If one spring breaks, it is recommended that all other springs be replaced at the same time to avoid mixing and matching parts.

Extension Springs:

- Less common
- Mounted on each side of the garage door
- Cheaper to replace
- Easy to repair
- Typically used for tilt-up, lightweight garage doors
- Only used for doors made of one piece
- Outdated, can be a safety hazard

Torsion Springs:

- Mounted above the door
- Modern, safer alternative to extension springs
- More difficult to install
- More expensive to replace
- Twist to make the door operate
- Used on roll-up sectional doors
