How Much Does Garage Door Opener Installation Cost?
The average cost of garage door opener installation is $250-350 per unit (including a mid-grade opener). However, there are several factors that may impact the cost of replacing your automatic opener. Use the list below to get a better idea of how much your project should cost.
1. Where do you live? The cost of garage door opener installation varies from city to city. If the cost of living in your area is higher, you should expect to pay higher prices for materials and labor.
2. Number of openers. Do you need more than one opener? If you have two-car garage with two separate garage doors, you will need to install a second opener. The contractor may offer a discount on the installation of additional openers.
3. Type of Opener. There are several types of openers to choose from: 1) chain drive, 2) screw-drive, 3) belt-drive, and 4) direct drive garage door openers. A chain drive opener is typically the most economical choice. Although belt drive openers are a little more expensive, they are also are much quieter.

4. Horsepower. Most garage door openers have a ½ horsepower motor. However, for larger doors you may need to upgrade to a ¾ HP or 1 HP motor. These openers tend to be a little more expensive.
5. Lighting. Make sure that the garage door opener has a light included. Although it may not seem important, the garage door opener may be the only source of light in your garage. The contractor can set-up a timer on the light so it automatically turns on and off with usage of the opener.
6. What’s included in the cost of installation? The contractor should install the opener along with the necessary sensors and keypads. The installer should program any remotes or clickers that came with the opener.
7. What’s not typically included in the cost of installation? Any garage door repairs will come at an additional cost. Replacing garage door springs or re-aligning tracks will cost extra. The programming of additional remotes will also tack on to the cost of the project.
8. Keypads and remotes. Garage door opener technology is constantly changing. Some garage door openers can be controlled by your smartphone or computer. Others can be opened by scanning your fingerprint. Keep in mind that you will be extra for these features.
9. Safety features. Try to find an opener with rolling code technology. This is an important safety feature that can prevent someone from breaking into your garage. Also, ask your contractor about reversing sensors. These will prevent the door from continuing to close if there is something or someone in the way of the door.
10. Battery back-up Ask your installer if the opener has a battery back-up in place. If the power were to go out for an extended period of time, you would still be able to access your garage.
